Is radiation an essential trace energy ?

چکیده

Radiation protection policy in the United States and in most of the world is based on the assumption that the risk of a radiation induced fatal cancer is linearly proportional to the dose. This is known as the linear, no-threshold (LNT) model of radiation risk. There are no human data to support this assumption for a short-term dose below 0.2 Gy ̄the equivalent of about two centuries of exposure to natural gamma radiation. If there is a threshold at 0.2 Gy (and much larger for low dose rate radiation) or benefits from the low dose rate radiation received by many workers, billions of tax dollars can be saved annually in the U.S.

Possible protective effect of naringin (a citrus bioflavonoid) against kidney injury induced by γ-irradiation and /or iron overload in male rats

Background: the supplementation of natural antioxidants such plant flavonoids may counteract the deleterious actions of gamma-irradiation and iron overload. Material and Methods: the protective effect of naringin (NIN) against kidney injury induced by γ-irradiation (IRR) (6.5 Gy) and/or iron dextran (ID) (50 mg/kg. b. w) has been studied in rats given 80 mg/kg b.w of NIN for 14 days before, and...

An approximate analytical solution of the Bethe equation for charged particles in the range of radiotherapy energy

Charged particles such as protons and carbon ions are an increasing tool in radiation therapy. However, unresolved physical problems prevent optimal performance, including estimating the deposited dose in non-homogeneous tissue, is an essential aspect of optimizing treatment. The Monte Carlo (MC) method can be used to estimate the amount of radiation, but, this powerful computing operation is v...

Radiation hormesis and adoptive response induced by low doses of limiting radiation

Ionizing radiation has long been known to produce detrimental biological effects. Although these harmful effects are the results of high doses of exposure, some other maladies such as mutation and cancer seems  to be induced at low doses of exposure. In recent decades, however, some pioneer scientists have indicated that ionizing radiation like many other essential agents has toxic effects  ...

P146: Role of Essential Trace Elements in Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive, neurodegenerative disorder with motor and non-motor signs and symptoms. PD is caused by idiopathic degeneration of dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra, located in the midbrain. Recently, Trace elements have been recognized to play an important role in the development of Parkinson’s disease (PD). The aim of this review ...

Assessment of radioactive contamination in water bodies around mine workings using radiation counter

The vulnerability of water bodies to contamination within the neighbourhood of open mine cast environ cannot be overemphasized. Evidence of radioactive trace elements associated with the target minerals in the Plateau State (Nigeria) showed the extent of this vulnerability. In order to address this challenge, the radioactivity levels of water samples from mine ponds, streams, wells, and borehol...
